A Day In Copenhagen

Surely, you could spend a week in Copenhagen and feel as though you did not get enough. In fact, any time spent in Copenhagen leaves visitors wanting to return. The Danish capital ranks among Europe’s most vibrant cities.

From charming outdoor cafes along the beautiful harbor Nyhavn (below is a picture I took of Nyhavn this past winter) to Europe’s longest pedestrian street, Stroget, Copenhagen offers visitors much to see and do.

Not The Little Mermaid

She’s a few steps farther along. The one pictured is the “New Mermaid,” erected by the entrepreneur who runs the cafe where she stands at Langelinie Pier in Copenhagen, Denmark.

One Perfect Day In Port: Copenhagen

Nyhaven

You could spend a week in Copenhagen and feel as though you did not get enough. In fact, any time spent here leaves visitors wanting to return.

The wonderful Danish capital ranks among Europe’s most vibrant cities. From charming outdoor cafes along the beautiful harbor Nyhavn to Europe’s longest pedestrian street, Strøget, and on to Tivoli, an amusement park and gardens dating back to 1843, Copenhagen offers visitors much to see and do — even if you only have one day.

The hotels in this guide span quite a range, not only in rates and location but also in character. Sample summer 2009 rates run from $158 per night for two people, with breakfast included, to $665 per night (don’t balk at the rate until you’ve read the review.)

All but two of the hotels are located in the heart of Copenhagen. Skovshoved, situated in a charming fishing village a four miles north of the Danish capital, is a lovely 22-room hotel with an award-winning restaurant, bar and a local pub next door (grab a beer and a Gammel Dansk and chat up the locals).

Also outside the heart of the city is the Hilton Copenhagen Airport, an excellent choice for those who want to “sleep in” before their flights home.

The other eight city-center hotels each have characters of their own.

Bye Bye Little Mermaid

Copenhagen’s beloved Little Mermaid, known from the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, will leave the city in 2010. She will travel around the world to be part of World Expo in Shanghai from April to November 2010. The Little Mermaid has never left her spot at Langelinie Pier, where cruise ships dock, since the statue was erected in 1913. While in Shanghai, her place in Copenhagen will be temporarily taken by a sculpture created by a Chinese artist.
